Text
Valerius Maximus 1.3.3:
Cn. Cornelius Hispalus, praetor with responsibility for foreigners in the consulship of M. Popilius Laenas and L. Calpurnius, by an edict ordered astrologers (Chaldaei) to leave Rome and Italy within ten days because by means of a fallacious interpretation of the stars they threw unstable and shallow minds into a darkness profitable to them through their lies. The same praetor forced the Jews, who had tried to infect Roman customs by the worship of Jupiter Sabazius, to return to their own homes.
