First Circular

Dear Participants of Melammu Symposia 8,

we are very much looking forward to seeing you in Kiel in November! Therefore we assembled some information you need or might find useful:

1. Travelling to Kiel: You can either get to Kiel by plane via Hamburg "Fuhlsbüttel" Airport (+ bus shuttle to "Kielius" Kiel) or by train. For further information on travelling (also on getting to the conference venue), see the following PDFs:

2. Accommodation: There are some hotels in Kiel, which allow a discount to university guests (in this case, you have to name a code during the booking process, see here). However, if you are certain to attend and are willing to book the hotelroom firmly, there are better deals via e.g. the Kiel section on booking.com. As we do not have the capacities to organize travel and accommodation for every participant, we kindly ask you to book yourself.

3. Reimbursement: We received a grant from Kiel University's Graduate School "Human Development in Landscapes" and are still applying for additional funding. Nevertheless, we probably won't be in a position to refund all your expenses for travelling and accommodation. Therefore, please apply for funding at your university or other appropriate institutions, we are still very grateful for any form of self-financing. Please let us know whether you get funding.

4. Programme: You can find the (preliminary) conference programme at the website of the Melammu Project (see here). Please check whether your name, affiliation and title have been written correctly, and inform us if there are any mistakes.

5. Presentations, Papers, and Abstracts: Every lecturer will have 20 minutes for his/her paper. As we have a tight schedule, session chairs will be asked to cut off talks at the 20-minutes mark, so please take this into account when preparing. Please remember that all conference contributions must be in English. Also, we kindly ask every lecturer to provide us with a) an abstract of your talk for the conference booklet (max. 350 words) as well as b) a paper or representative draft of your talk (as basis of the respective respondent's résumé) by October 1st at the latest. Please submit both items (in English) to us (sboysen@gshdl.uni-kiel.de), we will pass it to the relevant session respondent.

6. Excursion to Lübeck: For everyone who is interested, we offer the possibility to go on an excursion to the Hanseatic city of Lübeck on Saturday 15th of November (morning to afternoon). We will go there by train (costs: 9 euros for a roundtrip) and will be accompanied by a colleague from Kiel University's History Department specialized in the history of Lübeck. If you would like to join, please bear this in mind while booking travel/accommodation.

If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to contact us!

Best wishes from Kiel,

Josef Wiesehoefer and Sara Boysen
